She’s Not There: A Life in Two Genders, Jennifer Finney Boylan, 2003

A true story of Jim/Jennifer Boylan, an English Professor at Colby, husband, father of two sons, son, and brother who at the age of 40 decided that he could no longer live the lie that he was a male and embarked on gender changing therapy.  Knowing that his marriage, family, career, friendships were all at risk, the pain of continuing to deny his inner woman was so great, that he took those risks.  After hormone therapy, surgery, and a long transition (Maddy to his kids), he emerged at the other end of the tunnel as Jennifer, no longer John.  This is a deeply moving book, funny and tear- inducing in parts, but mostly human and humane.  It provided me with a beginning to understand the transgender individual and world.  Highly recommended
