Walking to Gatlinburg, Howard Frank Mosher, 2010

Mosher’s penultimate novel is a departure from the Northeast Kingdom, as 16 year old Morgan Kenniston leaves Kingdom Mountain in search of his older brother, Pilgrim, a Union Army surgeon who has disappeared after Gettysburg.  Morgan’s adventures mirror Homer’s Odyssey, Pilgrim’s favorite book, as he encounters Sirens, murderers, and ends up with the final scene at Polyphemus’ Cave in Tennessee.  This is, like the Odyssey, a string of adventures related to one another on a heroic search.  The characters are memorable and the action is vivid though sometimes incredible.  Mosher remains Vermont’s premier storyteller.
