Points North: Stories, Howard Frank Mosher, 2018

Published posthumously, this fine volume of stories is likely to be the final contribution of Mosher, Vermont’s answer to Homer and other grand story tellers of the past.  Living in Irasburg in Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom for more than 40 years, Mosher captured the climate, the terrain, and most of all the crusty, laconic, hard-working folks in Kennison County.  Six generations of Kennisons including secessionists, bootleggers, abolitionists, newspaper editors and judges fill these pages which alternately made me laugh out loud and tear up.  Mosher finished this book as he was dying of lung cancer and the final two stories are not among his best, but it’s a fine collection and addition to his wonderful body of work.
