My Bookstore: Writers Celebrate Their Favorite Places to Browse, Read, and Shop, ed. Ronald Rice, 2012
A collection of reminiscences by 84 writers about the bookstores that are central to their writing and reading lives. This book must be read in small doses since there is an inevitable repetitive nature to their comments: welcoming atmosphere, informed and attentive staff, great selection, community anchor, etc, etc. On the other hand, some of the chapters were very clever and some made me want to race to Nashville, Salt Lake City, or North Carolina’s many entries to sample the wares. Many of the authors were totally unknown to me, though they were all well-published, speaking to the huge variety of the written word out there. I’ve visited 12 of the 84 bookstores, so that leaves me with many new destinations to add to the Vogel and 251 odysseys.
