Loving, Henry Green, 1945

Green (b. 1905-d.1973) was a British businessman who wrote only 9 novels.  This one is the ‘downstairs’ tale of Irish servants during WWII and the deterioration of the ‘upstairs’ crowd.  When the butler dies in the first few pages, Charlie Raunce becomes the new butler and chaos ensues—confused identity due to there being 2 Alberts, love and infidelity—very Shakespearean and all sorted out amicably by the end.
