Written between 1946 and 1989 and translated from Italian by Lynn Sharon Schwartz, these insightful and plainly written essays concern human evil amidst the quotidian wonder of everyday life.  Ginzburg who died in 1991 lost her husband to the fascists during WWII and lived out her days in Rome where she was a leading member of the Italian literati.
