My Life with Bob: Flawed Heroine Keeps Book of Books, Plot Ensues, Pamela Paul, 2017
When Paul wrote an essay in the New York Times Sunday Book Review several years ago about her BOB, Book of Books in which she had kept track of every book she had read since childhood, I loved it. We shared some OCD characteristics but mostly because she loved to read as much as I do. When I saw this book at the Harvard Book Store, I impulsively bought it. Big mistake!!! I disliked it so much that I came very close to quitting in the middle. It’s a maudlin, over-emoting, and boring memoir of someone, who except for her reading, is not a very likable person. Turns out that I need to like either the author or the characters, in this case one and the same, for me to like a book. Paul makes some interesting observations about why we read and how we decide what to read next, questions that I’ve addressed in my annual essays over the years, but overall, this was a very long run for a very short jump. Skip it.
