It's been a long time since I have read something so monumentally fantastic. Theo of Golden totally knocked my socks off. Wholesome, emotional, and at times witty, I cannot see how any reader would not rave about this outstanding debut novel. This is Allen Levi's first novel. To pen a novel so engaging, so emotionally powerful, with superbly crafted sentences and passages, just blew my mind. His plot idea, his timing, his superb character development, and his expert writing skills, all pay tribute to the making of the great American novel. Why this did not win a Pullitzer is simply beyond me.

When our hero Theo, arrrives in the small town of Golden, the townspeople will not know what has hit them. Theo is a bit of an 86 year old mystery who does not reveal who he is, why he is there, or what his intentions are. He does not let them know his last name, and when asked about his past he is crafty at evaded their curiosity.

When he arrives on his first day, Theo walks into a nice little coffee shop and is surrounded by four walls of over 90 portraits done in pencil done by a local resident artist. As a connoisseur of art he finds them fascinating and extremely well done. In getting to know the barista he wonders why they have not sold. After getting a speculative reason why, he sits down and formulates and idea and plan to not only help the artist but to help himself. He proceeds to buy them one by one and bestow them back to the people the portraits are of. By sending out written invitations to meet him at the park bench near the town fountain, he begins a long journey of meeting some incredible people, all with surprising stories to tell him. The diverse characters of the local townspeople wonder just what this old man is really up to and cannot figure out why he is doing this.

You will laugh, you will cry, you will be shocked, and will have your heart bursting with love for Theo and his journey of making friends and becoming family to all of Golden's quirky people. This novel is a beautiful testimony to Life, and all that goes with it. The good, the bad, and the ugly all rear heads in Theo of Golden. Bravo and standing ovation to Allen Levi for writing from the heart this beautiful tale. Five stars and more from this avid reader!

News has it that Tom Hanks is going to co-produce the film and is in talks for playing Theo. I don't dislike Tom Hanks as an actor but my personal opinion is that he is not right for the part. I think Anthony Hopkins would be my first choice and Michael Caine would be my second. I guess we wait and see! Don't miss this gem of a book folks, you won't regret it.

There is so much revealed about the human condition that you can't help but apply what you've read to your own life experiences. One of the best books I've both read and listen to in a long, long time. Thanks for the author's inspiration and encouragement of others to bring this wonderful story of Theo to fruition. It will be with me for a long time to come.

This book caught my eye while browsing the staff-recommended selections at a small bookstore. Soon, I began seeing it mentioned as a word-of-mouth sensation on social media. Curious about how a self-published book by an unknown author could have gone viral in today's overcrowded book market and attracted millions of readers, I dove in. The hook and plot are compellingly simple. A mysterious, wealthy octogenarian who calls himself Theo but refuses to reveal a last name or discuss his past moves from New York City to the small Georgia town named Golden, where he ingratiates himself into the community by gifting portraits from a local artist and through other selfless acts of kindness. It's a feel-good tale that showcases the power of human connection, empathy, and goodness. There's a strong Christian element to the story, and it uses the power of art and music in ways that are genuinely moving and uplifting. Although the writing flows well and has a poetic flair at times, the author's choice of third-person omniscient narration for a story in which the big reveals (Theo's true identity and the reason for moving to Golden) are withheld until the end is rather unorthodox. The author's overwhelming preference for telling rather than showing also knocks it down a peg when judged on its literary merits. But the story is deeply touching nonetheless, proof that conforming to literary conventions isn't as important as agents and big publishers seem to believe if an author's work connects this well with its audience.

First of all, the amount of reviews and steady high rating should tell you something automactically. Although this review may be missed due to so many, hopefully this review helps you find your way to purchasing a copy and or audio because of it. I loved the audio as it helps you really understand the characters as they are meant to be portrayed. How do you even match a masterpiece of art in words? I will try my best.

This book is literally life changing. At least it was for me, an over night change. Similar to Scroogs change instantly on Christmas morning. I would not call myself a Scroog but there were things about myself I did not like but wasnt sure if I could change them or even how. I have never in my life thought a book could do that.

A good friend recommended it to me and I will be forever greatful. When I asked her if I would like it, her reply was profound yet simple and genuine. "If you don't like this book, you don't have a soul. Everyone in America needs to read it."

Boy was she ever correct. I admit, I was definitely someone that needed to read it.

You might find a little bit of yourself in each character which I very much did. I cried often, reflected a lot, had some giggle moments especially with one of my very favorite Characters, Ellen.

This book was so so profound to me that I don't want to read another book (listen actually, I love audio books) for a bit. I need time to take it all in. I have big feelings and am a deep thinker so this has made me want to sit with this.

In the dedication, Allen writes how his good friend promised to buy 100 copies if he actually published it and said, Will it be cash or credit? I chuckled and it gave me an idea.

Since it is my intention to do something special for my community as a small business owner and thank you to those that love my work and keep my doors open, I will putting a hand written note on my treatment room wall as well as displaying the book in honor of Theo and Allen. Everyone that takes the time to read the note and interested in a copy of the book or audio link will get a copy or email with the link free of charge as a gift. Title: A Moving, Universal Story That Stays With You

I don’t normally read this kind of fiction, and I have always resisted books we are told we are supposed to "mechanically appreciate" through a forced academic lens. But Theo of Golden completely won me over by letting the story simply flow on its own terms.

While the book is rich with literary mechanisms, symbolism, and deep biblical principles, it is far more than a faith-based story. The core themes at play, fairness, genuine kindness, and radical mercy, are not proprietary to any single belief system; they are universal human truths. It balances life's beauty with its harsh, sudden warts in a way that feels deeply authentic.

This is an extraordinarily enjoyable read that respects the reader, defies rigid categorization, and leaves you with insights that will marinate in your mind for a very long time.

I knew I would love this book instantly. A mysterious old man appears in a town to kindly, sweetly, and beautifully change the lives of every soul he meets.

I haven’t finished the book. I’m entering Chapter 51, but I have already decided that this will be a book I read twice. The first time, I feel, I am reading steadily to absorb and complete my understanding of the story from end to end. But the second time will be to “marinate” in the words of the book.

I am a devoted and avid gardener. When I began my current garden—a lovely piece of earth my husband and I have created together over many years—it was a very blank canvas. One stroke of the shovel and one handful of dirt led to another and another, until it was molded into a tiny botanical garden of sorts. In it, one surprise and wonder leads to another. The vision of the completed garden was always viewed from what a visitor might see and feel when experiencing it for the first time.

That vision all began with a quote from an unknown author that is pinned near my office window that overlooks the garden. It states, “All good garden paths should lead to loitering with fine intent.”

This book often leads you to stop and read the words again, or simply pause to marinate in the words themselves. This good book leads to “loitering with fine intent.”

To create a story such as this in your head is an incredible thing, but to “put it to paper” is something altogether different. The story itself is touching, and beautifully written, but there are deep, rich layers in the story and in the characters as well that take root in the reader.

This book does not qualify to be put in the category of just “A Good Read,” but rather in that special category of exceptional books that bring you to self-reflection. It makes you ponder about the people who have crossed your path—not as random encounters, but as people God may have purposefully placed there. It makes you think about how far-reaching thoughtfulness and kindness can be, and how the simplest of things can bring unexpected joy to another person. It may lead you to wonder what more kindness, more thoughtfulness, in your own life would look like. How to be more, give more, love more.

This is a book to pursue when you have the time to linger…to loiter with fine intent, with the expectation that it may change you. Its words may whisper to you again and again, well after the final page is turned.

To Allen Levi, I hope this is the greatest compliment I can give.

Honestly, for much of the book I thought it was a ‘nice’ book. Somewhat light on reality, but pleasant, and heart warming. But much like one of those books that get written about someone finding their religious way, or like good reality TV, you find you always knew that They were meant for greatness. In this case, I can see that the book was clearly meant for greatness. The characters were clearly meant for greatness. And the magic of the story, it too was great! I talked with my girlfriend about how I was feeling about the book right before finishing it, and I am glad that she recommended it as a book about kindness, and that was all she said.

I chose this book on a whim and am so glad I did. A beautiful story told, presented to you in small increments ,allowing you to savour every word and embrace each character. Thank you Allen Levi

An experience! This book struck a chord somewhere deep down and I am still missing it 4 days after finishing. It seriously prompted a few positive shifts in my everyday life actions. I wish I could read it again for the first time.

La historia se cuenta de forma muy linda, no es un libro que te enganche pero es fácil de leer, como en la mayoría de los libros hay algunas partes que están de más o un poco alargadas pero la escritura es bonita y en lo personal me dejó un mensaje y enseñanza de cómo vivir el presente y tratar a los demás. El final me hizo llorar como con ningún libro antes. Lo compré en kindle y lo voy a pedir en físico porque lo quiero volver a leer y lo necesito en mi biblioteca.
