To the Lighthouse, Virginia Woolf, 1927

Re-read (actually, listened) to this modernist classic which takes place almost entirely in the thoughts of Mrs. Ramsey, a beautiful and clever mother of 8 whose philosopher husband suffers from PTSS after the Crimean War.  Memorable supporting characters like Lily Briscoe and Charles Tansley on the Isle of Skye contribute to the run-up to the shocking news that Mrs. Ramsey has died 11 years earlier.  Not much happens, but what does is heart breaking in its mundane humanness.
