Titus Andronicus, William Shakespeare, 1592

This is a bloody, somewhat hysterical, and over the top tale of ancient Rome where Titus Andronicus returns from subduing the Goths, turns down the offer of becoming Emperor, and then is overwhelmed by the treachery and murderousness of the Goth queen, Tamara, who is taken as bride by the new Emperor, Saturninus.  After killing one of Tamara’s sons for a war sacrifice, Tamara’s sons kill Saturninus’ brother and ravish the brother’s wife, Andronicus’s daughter, Lavinia.  Then her sons frame Andronicus’s sons who are slain after Titus cuts off his hand to ransom their lives. You get the idea.  The final scene has Titus, Tamara, and Saturninus all killed.  No wonder the Goths have a bad rep!
