Thoreau’s Maine Woods, Dan Tobyne, 2010
This is a beautiful book of color photographs of Maine illustrating quotes from Thoreau’s The Maine Woods. HDT took three trips to Maine between 1846-1857, travelling under very primitive conditions through the deep pine forests, swamps, mountains, and rivers of Maine with Indian guides and using canoes. His book was instrumental in inspiring John Muir to push for the national park system and has been a touchstone for environmentalists and wilderness lovers for 150 years. Tobyne’s photographs are quite wonderful and capture the wildness of today’s Maine that is little changed from that of Thoreau’s time.
