The Sweet Goodbye by Ron Corbett 2022
Recommended in the Crime section of the NYT Book Review, this book fulfilled the hype.
Danny Barrett is an undercover cop sent by the FBI into Birmingham, Maine, a down on its luck mill town where Lee Forestry has been the main industry for years and where the Lee brothers, Tucker and Travis, are the leading citizens. Barrett is sent in to dig into the Lee operation which has accumulated $250 million in laundered money, the result of Beau LaFontaine’s drug, prostitution, and smuggling ring located 120 miles north deep into the North Maine woods.
By the end of the book, everyone mentioned in the last paragraph except Barrett is dead and Corbett has taken the reader for a quick moving ride with lots of unexpected dips, twists, and turns. This is a good one with some fine writing and character development, and with its cold, wet, gray Maine springtime setting, it’s a fine choice to read on a 90 degree summer day.
