The Cows, Lydia Davis, 2011

A small chapbook published by Sarabande Books in  Kentucky by one of the leading short story writers and translators (Swann’s Way and Madame Bovary) in the US.  Davis lives in upstate NY and must have these three cows and then two calves living across the dirt road.  Davis writes about them as I might have had I the patience and talent to sit and get down my observations about  Julie’s five cows in our field.  They stick their heads around the barn; they walk in a row; they lie down; they drink; they moo.  She does nothing more than describe their activities in plain prose, but it’s very charming and effective, like her short stories only the main characters are cows.  Loved it.
