The Burning Room, Michael Connelly, 2014

In this, Connelly’s 26th novel nearly all of which have focused on Harry Bosch, our fearless but aging detective has a new partner (20 something Lucia Soto, Lucky Lucy), a hot cold-case, and a terribly administrative supervisor—so what’s new. Bosch gets involved with mayoral and gubernatorial politics as he ties together two very cold cases—the ‘accidental’ shooting of a mariachi guitarist and the arson related deaths of 9 children at a housing project. The action is fast, the writing excellent, but the ending left me unsatisfied as Bosch loses his badge and gun for a minor miscue. Probably just setting us up for the next novel which will probably have Harry working unofficially and off the reservation continuing to do the ‘Everybody Counts or Nobody Counts.”
