The Art of Monhegan Island, Carl Little & Arnold Skolnick 2004
A beautiful collection of Monhegan-related paintings with text focused on the artists from Robert Henri to Jamie Wyeth who have thrill to Monhegan’s setting, 12 miles at sea and measuring 0.7×1.7 miles in size. Rockwell Kent referred to the isolation among the infinitude of the sea and sky. The text is divided into chapters on the harbor and work, the village, Cathedral Wood, the headlands, and the island edges. The text is uneven but features quotes and poems from a variety of good sources including Rachel Carson. Featured artists are Henri, George Bellows, Edward Hopper and Kent from the early 20th C and Reuben Tans, Hans Moller, Alan Grissow, and Jamie Wyeth from the late 20th C. Margueritte Robichaux has one oil painting included. Interesting follow ups will be the Ramsay Collection, visiting the Farnsworth Museum in Rockland, ME, checking the list of Carina House residency winners and finally returning to the Island to further experience and explore its beauty and history.
