Road to Valor, Aili and Andres McConnon, 2012

A gift from my son-in-law Gordon, this book written by his Princeton friend and his sister tells the tale of Gino Bartali who won the Tour de France in 1938 and 1948, bringing glory and hope to post-fascist Italy after World War II. Bartali was also a secret protector of Italy’s Jews both personally hiding a Jewish family and working with the Cardinal of Florence and a priest in Assisi to provide Jews with false identity papers. A good story, well told.
