Q’s Legacy, Helene Hanff, 1985

A delightful sequel to the 1970 84, Charing Cross Road tells of Hanff’s life in New York City from a young age (born 1917, died 4/11/1997) to her post-84 success. Visits to London and environs (including Sir Arthur Quiller-Couch’s rooms at Jones College, Cambridge) focus on the premier of the West End production of the play “84.” Friends, interviews, parties, fans, aging, New York apartment, all described in Hanff’s breezy style. A lovely reminder of Frank Doel, Marks, and Co ( not Co=company, but CO=Cohen, the partner and brother-in-law of Marks) and post war England during the 1949-1969 letter-writing years.
