Must You Go? My Life with Harold Pinter, Lady Antonia Fraser 2010
A lovely portrait of the marriage between Lady Antonia Fraser (a Catholic aristocrat with a peer husband and 6 children in 1975) and Harold Pinter (Jewish, East London playwright married to an actress and with one son in 1975). Beginning with the eponymous line at a dinner party, a 42 year love affair follows. Hundreds of name drops, dozens of obscure English locations, but a genuine love story made more interesting by Fraser’s historical books and Pinter’s plays, poems, and political speeches. The Nobel Prize in 2006 and the long decline with esophageal cancer are bittersweet endpoints of this delicious book. Bravo, Antonia!
