Minimalism: Art and Polemics in the Sixties, James Meyer, 2001
A detailed, fascinating look at Minimalism by an Emory University art historian using year-by-year primary sources—critic’s articles and books, gallery show catalogues, museum curator’s work, etc. to illuminate this exciting period. Critics such as Clement Greenberg, Michael Field, Lucy Lippard and Barbara Rose are quoted, as are Donald Judd and Robert Morris who wrote extensively, as is a radio interview with Judd, Stella, and Flavin. Galleries are highlighted—Tibord de Nagy, Green, and 10th St. Museum shows like Primary Structures, at the Jewish Museum in 1966 and Black, White and Grey at the Wadsworth Atheneum in 1964 are described. A very useful but dense book.
