Maigret on the Riviera, Georges Simenon, 1940
Inspector Maigret is sent to Antibes to investigate and keep a lid on the murder of William Brown, a former French intelligence officer. Maigret finds himself, as usual, in the middle of a complicated human drama with Brown’s family on the one side and his mistress and her mother and his other mistress, her young prostitute tenant, and her pimp on the other. Jaja, the owner of the Liberty Bar had stabbed Brown but Maigret, knowing that her CHF would kill her in the next few months, chose to let the whole matter go. A brilliant and enjoyable Simenon.
