Looking at Mindfulness:  Twenty Five Ways to Live in the Moment Through Art, Christophe Andre, 2014

In this splendid addition to a meditation library, Andre a French psychiatrist, explores mindfulness through discussing 25 paintings and how they illustrate concepts in mindfulness meditation.  There’s nothing new about meditation in this book, but Andre finds wonderful metaphors and illustrations through works by artists as varied as Fra Angelica, Andrew Wyeth, and Monet.   In each case, he explores an often over-looked element of the painting to illustrate or highlight a basic mindfulness topic,  adding  appropriate quotations from Simone Weil, Paul Valery, Thoreau and others. The 25 topics include: Experiencing the present moment, becoming aware of your breathing, checking on what is going on with your body, listening, being aware of the thoughtscape, etc.  Basic but beautifully described, illustrated, and annotated. This is a book to return to.
