Julia Margaret Cameron: In Focus, J. Paul Getty Museum, 1996
A beautiful monograph featuring 49 photos from the Getty’s collection of the work of this pioneering photographer. Cameron, born in India to a British/ French couple in 1815, married to Charles Hay Cameron in 1835—a financier who invested in tea plantations in Ceylon, mother of 6, and first widely-appreciated woman photographer, was a formative figure in Victorian London and the Isle of Wight where her summer retreat, Freshwater, served as a salon for many literary , artistic (especially the Pre-Raphaelites), and scientific (Herschel) glitterati, especially since it was next door to Alfred, Lord Tennyson’s home. Connections to Thackeray, Woolf, and Tennyson make the portraits fascinating. A lovely discovery thanks to the Liebovitz book!
