Hamlet, William Shakespeare, 1599
To Be or not To Be, and dozens of other famous quotes fill this, the longest of all Shakespeare’s plays. The Prince of Denmark, confronted with his father’s death and his mother’s marriage to his uncle Claudius, is visited by his father’s ghost who demands revenge. Hamlet then spends 5 acts trying to figure out whether he knows enough to act or not. Ophelia, Polonius, Laertes, Gertrude, Rosencrantz, and Guildenstern are all collateral damage before Hamlet is finally slain in the final scene. Oy!
