Gardening Wisdom: Time Proven Solutions for Today’s Gardening Challenges, Douglas Green, 2000

Green takes a rather unique approach by quoting extensively from 40 or so old gardening books, some back to the 18th C, and then building upon their time tested advice with observations from  his own gardening/landscaping/nursery business experience.  A valuable ‘how to do it’ book which basically pushes the concept near and dear to me:  It’s all about the soil, stupid!.  It turns out that our excellent experience with our perennials in Vermont is almost certainly due to the compost which I spread around the base of each and every plant every spring.  My estimate this spring was that I spread 850 pounds from the new compost bins.  Chapters on perennials, annuals, lawns, roses, bulbs and containers were all useful.  A fine addition to the garden library.
