Cabin Porn, Zach Klein, 2015
Klein and some friends leave NYC and find a secluded forest in the Delaware Valley, build some cabins and outhouses, and begin a web site and a school to teach self-sufficiency and simple living. The web site, Cabin Porn, has attracted 10 million visitors and over 12,000 people have shared photos of their cabins on the site. Many of these photos are ‘archived’ in the book along with 10 essays about individuals who have built their own cabins from yurts to underground spaces, from old silos to treehouses, from a maple sugar shack to a hut at Taliesin. The photographs are wonderful and the stories are inspiring, especially about the husband, wife, and son who trekked in all the materials to build their homestead six miles off a dirt road in the Santa Lucia Mountains of California. Reading this is a pleasurable way to spend an afternoon dreaming about one’s own cabin in the woods.
