Best American Essays, 1999, ed. Edward Hoagland, 1999

My exploration of this series continues with another step backwards into time, and Hoagland proves to be an eccentric editor choosing a quirky collection of mostly personal memoirs  of unconventional childhoods, occupations, hobbies, families and writing.   Andre Aciman on Proust’s home village, Joan Didion on publishing Hemingway posthumously, Annie Dillard on God and the physical world, Ian Frazier on hanging out as a kid, Mary Gordon on dementia and end of life and several unknown authors who contribute lovely work.
