Ask Me: 100 Essential Poems, William Stafford, 2014

Chosen by his daughter from among the more than 60 books of poetry written by this National Book Award winner (1963) and Poet Laureate (1970), this is a wonderful sampling of Stafford’s work.  It includes my all time favorite, You Reading This, Be Ready, as well as many poems about his youth in Kansas, nature, time, and his art.  Too many poems to reproduce here but the ones about the muskrat bite and the blood in the river, calling his old prairie home telephone, and many poems about waking up early in the morning when it is quiet and alone so one can be with nature are all worth reading and savoring.
