Antony and Cleopatra, William Shakespeare, 1603

Marc Anthony, Lepidus and Octavian (Julius Ceasar’s nephew and adopted son) are the three Roman emperors, but can’t seem to get along.  Marc Anthony ends up very involved with Cleopatra, neglecting the politics in Rome while his wife, Fulvia, and his brother fight with Caesar.  Anthony returns to Rome after Fulvia dies and is reconciled with Caesar who gives him Octavia, his sister, to wed and they give Sicily to Pompey to end his revolt.  This doesn’t hold, and Caesar fights with Anthony in Egypt.  Caesar wins, Anthony commits suicide when he hears that Cleo has died, and then Cleopatra kills herself with asps rather than be brought back to Rome as a slave.  Everyone is dead at the end, as usual.  Good Roman history.
