and yet….., Christopher Hitchens, 2015

This posthumously published collection of Hitchens’ work from 1991-2010 in Slate, Vanity Fair, the Wall Street Journal, The Atlantic, the Nation and other publications, is a valuable contribution to his oeuvre.  All of his proclivities are on full display—anti-religion, Leftist, pro-Dickens and Orwell, anti-British and American propaganda, and pro-American democratic principles.  He writes engagingly and with great insight, erudition, and humor.  His personal pieces on improving his person, On the Limits of Self Improvement, are a very funny commentary on today’s self-help industry.  He smokes, drinks, and eats to excess, not aware of the esophageal cancer that will prematurely end his life in 2014.  One of the best modern writers on the societal foibles in today’s world, his commentaries on Chesterton, Dickens, Luxembourg, Edmund Wilson, Naipaul, Didion, Guevara and on and on are entertaining, informative, and a fine addition to his earlier works.
