A Farewell to Arms, Ernest Hemingway 1929

A timeless tale of war, love, and loss told with brilliant description and dialogue by this American Nobelist.  Frederic Henry and Catherine Barclay may be the most wonderful couple ever, thrown together in the chaos of WWI’s Italian/Austrian battles in the mountains between Venice and Trieste and in Milan, Montreaux, and Lausanne where Cat dies in childbirth.  This is an epic tale told small.  The descriptions of shelling, battle wounds, the retreat, and the shooting of officers and Henry’s escape are marvelous.  Bravo, Ernest!
