Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption, Lauren Hillenbrand, 2010
The incredible tale of Louie Zamperini, a rough and tumble lad from Torrance, California who becomes an Olympic runner in 1936, meeting Hitler and getting to know Jesse Owens. Louie enlists after Pearl Harbor (age 23) and is a bombardier in a B-24 Fortress involved in multiple major battles before his plane crashes in the Pacific. The pilot and he survive to end up in four different Japanese POW camps where he is abused, beaten, starved and chosen by a sadistic Japanese sergeant “Bird” for special abuse. Louie survives only to return to alcoholism, PTSD, and depression after marrying. He finds Jesus after hearing Billy Graham in Los Angeles in 1949 and lives a life helping others. A great story!
