What We Talk About When We Talk About Anne Frank, Nathan Englander, 2012
A collection of eight short stories by Englander, a Brooklyn-bred author. Most of the stories take place in Israel or involve Israelis, the Holocaust, or/and survivors. Most are quite affecting, especially the title story where issues of feminism, orthodoxy, and personal responsibility play out among two couples in Miami. “Sister Hills” is a history of Israel and how its ongoing moral claims have become distorted. Family and childhood figure large in “How We Avenged the Blums” and “Everything I Know About My Family on My Mother’s Side,” while the Holocaust dominates “Camp Sundown” and “Free Fruit for Young Widows.” Engaging and stimulating but not quite fully formed—a bit too sentimental and emotional.
