Northern Oracle, Kirsten Dierking, 2007
A book of poems given to me by Debbie after she heard them on the Writer’s Almanac. Kirsten Dierking writes beautifully, basing her stanzas on the lakes, snows, and forests of Minnesota, where her Finnish ancestors settled. Aging is a constant theme—
“It seems I slowed
Into older limbs
As naturally as rain running down
The face of the window.
Or
How did I get here
Or
You stop leaving into the future
Beautifully phrased (e.g. “The future already underway,” “The last green wonders of late Fall.”) Lovely collection, worth returning to.
