Of Human Bondage, W. Somerset Maugham, 1915
Philip Carey born with a club foot, survives the death of his mother, his cold and unloving Vicar Uncle, public school in Kent, painting in Paris, and the loss of his inheritance through speculative S. African mining stocks to finish medical school and ultimately get over a disastrous love for Mildred who mistreated him. He marries Sally, gives up the idea that the world owes him everything, and settles down for a lovely home life and the practice of medicine. A real slog but ultimately worth it. Fine story and writing.
