This volume left me a little confused and unsatisfied. The early work, especially, lacking punctuation, context, and narrative was quite difficult. The translator in his introduction uses the term ‘dazzlingly hermetic’, ie totally opaque! The latest poems, however, were quite beautiful and had many of the same elements and feel of his novels. Themes of borders, journeys (especially by train), archives, landscapes, photographs, reading, time, memory, myth, legend, etc are present even when the language is difficult and the references unintelligible. Much of this difficulty may be due to the challenges of translation which are addressed at length in the introduction. My preference is to stay with Sebald’s novels and essays and leave the poetry for others.
