The Intimate Garden:  Twenty Years and Four Seasons in Our Garden, Gordon and Mary Hayward, 2005

The Haywards bought a home in southeastern Vermont in 1984 and tell the story of building their gardens in this useful and beautifully photographed volume.  There are some very interesting parallels with our own experience in Vermont gardening which began in 1987.  They bought from Ruth Jolly in Windsor, and Scott Bolotin of Morningstar Perennials worked for them.  They had a bad experience with Petasites (and still do, according to the book).  They had an old shed which they used for the garden, and on and on.  The book is probably pretty boring for the average reader, but for the Vermont gardener, it is rich in interesting details and ideas.  A fine addition to the garden library in Brownsville to sit next to Eck and Winterrowd’s similar and better volume.
