The Necessary Death of Lewis Winter, Malcolm Mackay, 2013

Recommended by Bill Pappas, this is the story of an Glasgowean hit man, Calum MacLean who earns a reasonable living murdering people.  An independent operator, Calum is hired by an established but relatively small time gangster to murder White, a failure of a drug dealer and minor thug who has been moving into his territory.  Over a tense 300 pages, we see Calum’s careful work, White’s tragic daily life with his small time drug deals and his young, attractive, and unfaithful girlfriend, and the maneuvers of the Scottish police detective committed to stopping crime and punishing the criminals.  A good read with vivid characters and a fast moving plot.
