Maigret in Court, Georges Simenon, 1960
An excellent Maigret which begins in court, many months after the vicious murder of a 62 year old woman and the 4 year old girl she was sitting for. The nephew, Gaston, is the accused and the blood stained suit in his closet and his movements that day seem to make this an open and shut case until Maigret offers testimony gathered at the last minute that Gaston’s wife was having numerous affairs and might have colluded with a lover in the murders. Gaston is acquitted and Maigret watches carefully but with full knowledge as Gaston gets a gun and hunts down the real murderer and lover of his wife. The book ends with Gaston headed back to jail and to the Court once again. A pretty deep Maigret views the world and the complex people who inhabit it.
